Akeelah and the Bee Movie Story - Synopsis. This story is about Akeelah Anderson (Palmer), a girl from south LA good at words. Although her mother objects, Akeelah enters various spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the Dr. Larabee; her principal Mr. Welch and the residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah’s aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a national contest and in turn unites her neighborhood. A Lionsgate Film -- AKEELAH AND THE BEE was written and directed by Doug Atchison.
